The 2024 FIFA Awards in Doha celebrated the brightest stars in football, with Brazil and Real Madrid forward Vinícius Jr. (24) earning the prestigious FIFA Men’s Player of the Year title. Spain and Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmatí (26) also made history by securing the Women’s Player of the Year award for the second consecutive year.

Vinícius Jr.: A Stellar Season Recognized

Vinícius Jr. dazzled the football world with 24 goals in 39 appearances, playing a pivotal role in Real Madrid’s La Liga and Champions League doubles. His standout performances included a decisive goal in the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund. Overcoming tough competition from Spain and Manchester City’s Rodri and Real Madrid teammate Jude Bellingham, Vinícius solidified his place among football’s elite.

“It seemed impossible when I played barefoot in the streets of São Gonçalo, and now I’m here,” Vinícius reflected during the ceremony.

Despite narrowly missing the Ballon d’Or to Rodri in October, the Brazilian star’s triumph underscores his meteoric rise. Vinícius accepted the award with Real Madrid present in Qatar for the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final against Mexico’s Pachuca.

Aitana Bonmatí: Dominance Continues

Aitana Bonmatí’s incredible form earned her a second FIFA Women’s Player of the Year award, adding to her Women’s Ballon d’Or victory earlier this year. The 26-year-old midfielder spearheaded Barcelona’s domestic treble and Champions League triumph last season. On the international stage, she shone in Spain’s Nations League victory, scoring critical goals in both the semi-final and final.“I’m very grateful for this award, but I always say that this is a team effort, with a Barca that won everything and the national team,” Bonmatí humbly stated.

Coaching Greatness: Ancelotti and Hayes Take Top Honors

Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti was named Best Men’s Coach after guiding his team to a La Liga and Champions League double. “I want to share this with the club, with my president, and with my players, those of the best club in the world,” Ancelotti said.

Emma Hayes claimed the Best Women’s Coach award for leading Chelsea to their fifth successive Women’s Super League title and steering the U.S. Women’s National Team to Olympic gold.

Spotlight on Spectacular Goals

Alejandro Garnacho’s acrobatic finish for Manchester United against Everton won him the Puskás Award for Best Goal of the Year. Brazil’s Marta, a legend in women’s football, claimed the inaugural Marta Award, named in her honor, for her sensational strike against Jamaica.

Goalkeepers and Team Recognition

Alyssa Naeher of the Chicago Red Stars was named Best Women’s Goalkeeper, while Emiliano Martínez of Aston Villa and Argentina took home the men’s honor. Real Madrid dominated the Team of the Year lineup with five representatives, further cementing their reputation as a powerhouse in world football.

A Celebration of Excellence

The 2024 FIFA Awards highlighted extraordinary talent and achievements across the football spectrum. From Vinícius Jr.’s inspiring journey to Bonmatí’s continued dominance, the night in Doha served as a testament to the beauty and passion of the game.
