Bologna made a nice comeback to win 2-1 and achieve their first UCL win ever; they also shattered the chance of Borussia Dortmund for finishing in the group of top eight of the league phase.
Nuri Şahin, who was under pressure, felt relieved when his gang showed that Borussia Dortmund know how to play UCL at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara because in fact, the Germans controlled the first part of the game.
Łukasz Skorupski just managed to save a free kick from Pascal Groß before he was almost able to stop a penalty in the 12th minute.
Referee Serdar Gözübüyük pointed to the spot when Emil Holm dragged Waldemar Anton down inside the box. Serhou Guirassy barely put away his panenka, which almost turned into a back-flick. Skorupski was diving the right way, but after touching the ball, it was too late to deny the Guinea international from hitting the back of the net.
Bologna are proud to be in the UCL this season despite facing severe challenges in European football. However, the Italian side notched up a good performance from behind after looking for what would be only the second goal in this season's competition.
Julien Duranville did his best in order to prevent danger from a tricky cross by Riccardo Orsolini with the last possible minute interception. Bologna's key man came to the fore once more soon after, when he unleashed a shot that had to be turned around the post very well by BVB goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.
Orsolini, who was livid, marched out with a stretcher after suffering an injury 10 minutes to halftime. The home side proved positive in the second half, but for the most part of the game, made it so unlikely that Kobel in the away goal couldn't be seriously tested.Energy and hard work, though helped Bologna to turn the tide of the game in two minutes only.
First, Thijs Dallinga scored very close to the goal after a perfect cross from Jens Odgaard. Substitute Samuel Iling-Junior reacted the quickest when Kobel managed to turn behind an Odgaard effort, and the Englishman scored what proved to be a historic winning goal for the home side.
The visitors never looked like they could get over the shock. Bologna handled the last 10 minutes easily, winning it in historical terms where their slim hopes of qualification are still alive.
