Ademola Lookman netted a dramatic 87th-minute winner as Atalanta edged to AC Milan with a 2-1 scoreline at the Gewiss Stadium, thus leapfrogging Napoli to claim the top spot in Serie A.

The current run of Atalanta has now been extended further to a remarkable total of 14 matches that have not been lost and which currently also show a solid stake in their title credentials this season.

The home team started positively in their bid to make a statement against league leaders Napoli. Marco Carnesecchi reflexively denied a Christian Pulisic shot, but the hosts quickly left him out of the picture.

With a towering leap over Theo Hernández to head in a pinpoint free-kick from Marten De Roon, Charles De Ketelaere, a former Rossoneri player, punished his old team-the goal marking Atalanta's seventh this league inside the first 15 minutes this season, another league-best stat.

Milan did not take too long to respond, with Rafael Leão taking matters into his own hands and sending a cross from the left that Álvaro Morata slid in to equalize just 10 minutes after.

The high-paced back and forth kept things interesting for fans as Atalanta squandered chances to retake the lead before the half-time whistle.

Christian Pulisic hobbled off with an injury, which left Paulo Fonseca's side even thinner in forward numbers heading into the second chapter.

The intensity ratcheted up in the second half as both teams began searching for the deciding edge. Tijjani Reijnders tested Atalanta's defense, with Raoul Bellanova missing a golden opportunity for the home side to take the lead.

As time went by and shots on target dried up, the Gewiss Stadium hummed in anticipation of a late twist.

That was the moment in the 87th minute, as he had been answered by Lookman as he forced Mike Maignan to make a fantastic save earlier.

Lookman latched onto a delivery from Lazar Samardžić and headed it home at the far post - securing a vital victory for Gian Piero Gasperini's men.

This victory does, however, take the crowning glory in Serie A.
